Cars are majorly categorized into two types, namely Sedan (Saloon) & SUV.
Saloon Cars (which is also called Sedan Cars) is a type of passenger vehicle that has four wheels, four doors, and low ground clearance. An SUV is a type of car that has four wheels and four doors but a high ground clearance. Sedans have been on the market since the 20th century; however, SUV’s have been on the market since the 1930s.
Sedans have three components, with the engine component located at the front end, the passenger area in the middle, and the cargo component at the rear end. SUV’s have two compartments with the engine compartment in the front, and the passenger and cargo compartment is most times combined into one.
Both sedans and SUVs have four wheels and four doors, but how they differ is the type of clearance each has.
SUVs are utility vehicles. This car type is built to be more robust, bigger, and more potent than a sedan. Though some of the new SUVs are more focused on urban ride quality, at their core, SUVs are utility-oriented, which is to say, to handle rougher roads and venture off the road too.
Let us have a simple comparison between a Sedan and an SUV.
What makes a Sedan better?
- Softer suspension setup.
Sedans have relatively softer suspension compared to SUVs. SUVs are designed to be able to handle rugged terrain and heavy loads and therefore have stiff and thus, jarring suspension setup. Generally, the ride quality is more comfortable in a sedan.
- High-Speed stability.
Sedans have a low ride height compared to SUVs. They are also long and sleek. This car type makes for a low centre of gravity/mass. This great feature in a sedan car helps to reduce the body roll one might experience while cornering significantly. Sedans are substantially more stable at manoeuvring or high-speed runs than an SUV.
- Better interiors.
Even though premium SUVs have opulent interiors, in general, sedans have more lush & exquisite interiors than an SUV. For the same price, you often get much more comfortable interiors in a sedan compared to an SUV.
Here are a few examples of sedan cars (Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Honda Accord, Acura TL, Mercedes Benz C300 e.t.c)
What makes an SUV better?
- More Space
If you happen to have a big family or group, the passenger capacity of a sedan just won’t do. This car type is especially necessary if you still have more luggage to carry aside from the passengers. SUVs have a box-shaped build and thus can pack in a lot of space — significantly more than a sedan. A Mid-size SUV can contain up to six(6) passengers without them getting crammed.
SUVs are generally much taller than sedans. Thus, they offer superior headroom for all passengers. Most SUVs offer outstanding legroom in the first and second row too, while the third row tends to be cramped.
- Better ride quality on bad roads
SUVs are more reliable on Offroad. While the sedans might offer a better ride on the highways, SUVs offer better quality ride over the bad roads. SUVs offer relatively comfortable ride over broken roads as compared to a sedan, thanks to their substantial wheel sizes and suspension travel. You need a vehicle that can be just as adventurous as you are. A sedan is typically anything but bold. On the other hand, an SUV is capable of going through any trail just fine. SUVs also do better in flooded areas; A lot of SUV models are capable of going through shallow water safely and without damaging the car’s engine.
A few sedans are available with all-wheel drive, but the option of a robust AWD system is a prerequisite for most SUVs. If you’re likely to experience less-than-perfect weather, an SUV might just suit your perfect need.
Here are a few examples of SUV cars namely (Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, Mercedes Benz GLK, Toyota Sienna e.t.c)
In Conclusion: Choosing between a sedan or an SUV depends on your present budget and need. For instance; If you’re a bachelor just starting life, you should opt for a saloon because it’s easier to keep in order than an SUV. But if it’s the other way round, if you’re married with kids, you should own an SUV for better comfort.
If your travel is primarily in urban areas and highway travel, more like the island. You can opt for a sedan car. Unless you are over 6 feet tall, it is more comfortable, faster, and much more fuel-efficient at the same time.
If your travel involves bad roads or if you need seating for more than five passengers, SUV is the better option. It also helps your luggage needs without disrupting your comfort. Keep in mind though that SUVs have lower fuel efficiency and relatively higher maintenance costs.
With the few points highlighted, no one won the comparison battle, but it all balls down to your budget and needs as rightly said above.
